"The eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of that particular ray. We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents."

Research Topic Blog

For my research topic, I am considering doing something related to sleep. Correct sleep patterns have been something I've struggled with for a long time. I have done surface research on the topic and find it fascinating. The sleep cycles and REM really interest me. The problem that I have is how I can make my topic a question with out it being too simple for a paper. From what I know at this moment, sleep is not a very controversial topic. What if I did something related to sleep disorders? Or, what about sleep disorders in prominent writers. That's related to my major. Would there be much research to make comparisons for that?

What if I backed away from the sleep topic and looked at the media of writing. I'm an English major and I want to be a writer. Maybe I could examine where print and writing stand in the media scheme of things and make an argument for whether or not this is appropriate. But I'd probably have to narrow it down to journalism or something like that. Any thoughts?

  1. I think that you're on to something very important with your idea of sleep. It would probably help your argument a great amount if you maybe narrowed your subject range to a specific subgroup of society, for example: What are the effects of insomnia of college students' test scores? or study habits? or ability to write papers? etc...
You could mix-match the combinations here in anyway you want best. Maybe changing the college students part to something else, or even changing insomnia as a trigger. That's just an idea. Good luck!

  2. Thanks. There's something called sleep hygiene that really interests me. For example, doing homework in bed would be poor sleep hygiene because then your brain associates your bed with homework. I'm not entirely sure how to narrow all of this stuff down though.

  3. I like the idea of sleep research. Can I be one of your testers? As long as I can do it during our English class... :P

It sounds like a wonderful thing to research. You could find out the best ways to fall asleep and the best ways to sleep well. I would enjoy reading your paper if you did it on sleep and the REM cycle.

  4. I also like the idea of sleep.....i think i'm lacking in that department. If you wanted to connect it to the media and make it a question, you could maybe look into how the media affects young people's sleep habits....the time of certain tv shows, advertisements of late night events, or showing young people out and about whenever, as well as products that try to cover for lack of sleep, like energy drinks, etc. Might be some interesting findings in there. That's my thought.
